Campus recycling program reduces organic waste in landfills

Today I am reading an article from the 24 hours Vancouver edition regarding the Vancouver community collage new recycling program. At first I was skeptical because one of the first things I noticed is that they are shipping the organic waste 250 km northeast of Vancouver. I have always believed that driving garbage around is contributing significantly to damaging the environment in British Columbia.

However, once I read further who is using the organic material and what it is used for, I had a change of mind. Local farmers are using the organic material for compost. I realized that the Vancouver Community Collage might be the only big source of organic material for compost for these farmers. However, as we get more organized behind the recycling science and economy, smaller farming communities should be able to find sources of organic material located at shorter distances. In the beginning, nothing will be perfect  and I think what Vancouver Community Collage is doing is good enough for now. For the first couple of months these guys diverted over 111 tons of organic waste from the dump. It is a good start and our junk removal company is happy to see this development.

I can see a future when such organization will not have the need to ship their organic waste to anyone. Recycling technology will simply allow them to have the ability to turn that organic waste or even green waste into energy that will power their buildings.
